  • History of Nationwide Flashing Signal Systems, Inc.(NFSS)

- With the passage of state and county laws requiring homes to be equipped with smoke detectors, the late Howard M. Haines and his wife, Elaine saw a need to make available a light alerting system with smoke detectors, thus NFSS was created. NFSS was the first company in the United States to overcome the barriers deaf and hard of hearing persons had with smoke detectors. Howard and Elaine established NFSS as a mail order electronics business in their home basement (for 7 years) which catered to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing.

- NFSS, a deaf-owned and operated company, eventually grew and relocated to downtown Silver Spring, Maryland in a new office building. NFSS expanded its product line which included wireless alerting systems (both lighting and auditory) telephone and doorbell systems, baby cry signalers, alarm clocks, TTYs, bed vibratos, pagers, TV decoders and other everyday living accessories, including security alarm systems.

- A new division was added: NFSS Service Center which became one of the largest TTY service centers in the United States.

- Paul S. Haines, the owners' son, was hired as General Manager and was responsible for the daily operation of NFSS and the NFSS Service Center.

- A branch office called NFSS-West was established in Los Angeles, CA.

- NFSS Telestar TTY was the first model that had a 2-line LCD display.

- When the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) became effective, NFSS devices such as TTYs and other accessories became in great demand for public accommodations.

- With the unexpected death of Howard M. Haines, Elaine B. Haines became President and Paul as Vice President. Many people remembered Howard as a pioneer among deaf entrepreneurs, being among the first to set up a business for sales, distribution, and service of TTYs and visual alerting devices. During his 16-year tenure as President, NFSS, Inc. developed a national reputation for excellence in sales and service.

- Elaine B. Haines and her late husband were honored with the prestigious award, "Successful Deaf Entrepreneurs of the Year," selected by the Board of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Entrepreneurs Council, for their many years of teamwork and mentorship as visionary entrepreneurs in the Deaf Community.

- Upon the retirement of Elaine B. Haines, NFSS, Inc. was sold to James and Richard Kelly. Paul S. Haines continues as General Manager of NFSS. The company now trades as NFSS Communications.

- Now we have made another change. In July we closed our public showroom and converted to a "Mail order / WEB based internet" only company. At the same time we reduced ALL of our prices and have become a Discount provider of all products at a lower price than anyone else, - guaranteed!

- Upon the retirement of James Kelly, NFSS, Inc. was sold to Michael J Tischler III, who is now acting President and Diana J Tischler on as Secretary of NFSS. The company now trades as NFSS Communications-ILL., Inc and operates out of Illinois. NFSS Communications-ILL., Inc continues to provide all products at a lower price!

- Michael and Diana Tischler decided to merge their two companies: NFSS Communications-ILL., Inc and Assisted Access, Inc. in order to provide access to a wider range of assistive devices for daily life at one location. We now have available products for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Blind/Low Vision, as well as Home/Health Related items for the Disabled, Aging and those in Rehab.
